When Is the Best Time to Trim Trees in Charlotte, NC?

Tree Trimming Timing in Charlotte

One of the most common questions we hear from Charlotte homeowners is: "When should I have my trees trimmed?" The answer depends on the species, the reason for trimming, and what's happening with the tree. Here's a practical guide based on our 10+ years of tree trimming experience across Mecklenburg County.

Winter: The Best Time for Most Trees

For most deciduous trees — oaks, maples, poplars, and sweetgums that are common across Charlotte — late winter (January through early March) is the ideal trimming window. The tree is dormant, so pruning causes less stress. Without leaves, our crew can see the branch structure clearly and make better cuts. And there's less risk of spreading disease since most pathogens are also dormant.

Summer Trimming

Summer trimming works well for corrective pruning — removing branches that are growing in the wrong direction, rubbing against structures, or creating too much shade. Charlotte's long growing season means trees put on a lot of growth between April and September, and sometimes mid-season corrections are needed.

Deadwood Removal: Any Time of Year

Dead branches should be removed whenever you notice them. There's no wrong time to take out deadwood — it's always a safety improvement. Charlotte's thunderstorm season runs from May through September, so clearing dead branches before summer is especially smart. When NOT to Trim

Avoid heavy pruning during the spring flush (late March through May) when trees are pushing out new growth. Cutting during this period wastes energy the tree has already invested. For oaks specifically, avoid pruning during the active growing season to reduce the risk of oak wilt transmission.

Species-Specific Notes for Charlotte

  • Crepe Myrtles: Prune in late winter. And please — no topping. Proper pruning preserves the natural form.
  • Pine Trees: Best trimmed in late winter to early spring before new candles emerge.
  • Dogwoods: Trim right after flowering in spring to avoid cutting off next year's blooms.
  • Fruit Trees: Late winter pruning promotes better fruit production.
